Days like this were made for Corvettes

Photograph from my “taking the long way to work” drive

Today was an ABSOLUTELY gorgeous day, with temperatures in the 100’s all up and down the coast of California. I worked from home most of the day with the sliding glass doors wide open.  Late afternoon found me needing to drive down to a client’s data center in Santa Clara. Of course I didn’t know that I needed to make the trip until after 3:00 pm, which would mean that I’d be sitting in traffic on US 101… Not exactly my idea of fun.

So when I hit the freeway, I decided to take Highway 280, which would take me a bit further south than I needed to go, but would probably not have the same degree of congestion that 101 would. The plan worked great, and I didn’t encounter any traffic slowdowns. But, there was one hitch....

As I was cruising along 280, I was coming up on the exit for Highway 35.  Highway 35 is also known as Skyline Drive.... It’s a beautiful two lane highway that runs along the top of the coastal mountain range. There are panoramic views of the Penninsula cities as well as the Pacific Ocean. And… Skyline Drive has some of the best recreational roadway in the Bay Area (and if you looked at the map, Highway 84 is really spiffy too!). On the weekends it’s very common to see lots of motorcycles and sports cars zooming along… I usually drive the road late at night, and it is one of my favorites roads.

I couldn’t resist today. I found myself taking the turnoff for Highway 35, rationalizing that it would add less than an hour to my commute… But dare you think I’m a slacker, I still managed to put in TWELVE hours of REAL work today!!

It was well worth the extra hour. The sun was shining, the top was down, traffic was practically non-existent. With KMFDM’s latest (WWIII) blasting on the Bose, I left behind the worries and stresses of the real world and was transported to the world of ‘Vette!

Unfortunately, after my all too brief respite of sheer pleasure driving, I dropped down out of the mountains and into the city again. It was only 15 minutes after taking the above photograph that I took this photo:

And then 10 minutes after that I was in the Data Center: No windows, Air Conditioned to the point where I put on a sweatshirt, very noisy because of all the fans and stuff on the servers, and lit only by flourescent lights… Ugh!
