Lindy Hoppers invade Union Square in San Francisco!!!

A mass invasion by a mass of joyful dancers makes Union Square in San Francisco a hopping spot today

If anyone has contact information for this group, please send me an email, and I’ll update the posting with a link to their site.  Note, these photos have been resized and converted, but have not been edited/touched up etc… Sorry, simply ran out of time and wakefulness tonight. If you’re interested in using a photo let me know, I have the 15mb raw image files.  Otherwise, I hope you enjoy the shots as much as I enjoyed taking them!

Happy Birthday Abe!

Photograph of the Lincoln Memorial at night

Happy Birthday Abe! You were a hell of a man!

When I had the good fortune to visit Washington D.C. Last year, one of the things that I was sure to see was the Lincoln Memorial. It was awe inspiring and caused me to reflect on what a significant human being he was and how important he was to our country.  Of course I “had” to get pictures of the memorial at night… Sheila was her usual tolerant and patient wife and accompanied me on a night time jaunt through the mall…

I can think of no better time than the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth to post a picture of the Lincoln Memorial.

Time to buy ice cube trays

How far will one man go to get ice for his scotch?

image

Sitting on the bus on the way home today the idea occurred to me that a scotch on the rocks would fit my hand very nicely while sitting on my balcony relaxing upon my arrival at home. The only problem was I had no ice at home, and I really like ice with my scotch; without ice, the picture wasn’t completely satisfying.

Lack of ice, a situation easily remedied, right?

I got off the bus two block east of the stop that is across the street from my apartment, and walked one block west, and one block north to get to Walgreens. They were out of ice. I walked another block North to a liquor store. They had ice, but a $7.00 minimum purchase with debit cards. All I needed was ice, and I didn’t have any cash. I just couldn’t justify buying $5.00 worth of stuff I didn’t want or need to get my $2.00 bag of ice. I walked one block East, and them two blocks South, looking for an ATM. The only one I could find cost me $2.00 for the non-network ATM (not counting the $2.00 that my bank will charge me for using a non BofA ATM). Nevertheless, I was getting frustrated, and my eventual glass of scotch would be worth all this effort. Another block South and then a block West brought me to a small grocery store. They were out of ice! So my trek continued another block South to yet another liquor store. They had ice! Now I’m only two block South, and one block East of my apartment.  I’ll leave it to you to count how many blocks I went looking for ice.

But it was worth it!

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

How I spent last night having a Polysomnography

My oh so patient and tolerant wife, Sheila, has long suffered with my snoring. Despite wearing ear plugs, it’s not uncommon at all for her to be disturbed by the racket coming from my soft palate. She has told me repeatedly that I stop breathing while sleeping. I’ve asked a couple of doctors about this, and they have indicated that I don’t have the “physiology” for Sleep Apnea.  However, I trust my wife more than the doctors and pursued the matter with a specialist. A visit to an Ear Nose and Throat Doctor a couple of months ago resulted in the ordering of a Polysomnography also known as a sleep study. Thankfully my health insurance covers this expensive, hospital based over-night test.  Living in a big city has it’s benefits, as the Sleep Lab at the UCSF Mt Zion facility, is less than a mile from our apartment.  The Sleep Technologist can’t give a diagnosis, that must wait until the Sleep Doctor issues his report, but in my judgment, based on the more than 100 interruptions to my sleep in about 3 hours and the way the use of CPAP or VPAP virtually eliminated them, it certainly seems that I have Sleep Apnea.

Of course, being a photojournalist, I had to take pictures of the experience of the test. Here’s a picture of Sean, the Sleep Technologist, getting me all hooked up for the study and there are more photos in the gallery…
