Dragonfly Portrait

Photograph of a Red Skimmer Dragonfly

image

Another shot from Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden in Santa Barbara. I used to live a block away from the Garden, and worked right across the street, so I spent many a lunch time standing in the pond waiting for dragonflies to land nearby.  I must have presented quite a funny site—standing in the water chasing bugs! But I like the results!

I was shooting with my Nikon N70 and by this time had figured out that shooting Fuji Velvia and Provia was the way to go. Fill flash balanced with ambient light yielded the best results. I have TONS of these dragonfly photos. I discovered a love of and respect for dragonflies while trying to capture images of these amazing creatures. I continue to appreciate and shoot them even now. Yesterday I was thrilled to get a nice closeup shot of a blue dragonfly over at the Hayward Shoreline in Northern California.  I’m sure you’ll see more dragonflies on Shooter.net.

Happy Bugs

Photograph of lady bugs mating

image

I shot this photo a long time ago, in a land far away: Santa Barbara. I was on an early morning stroll through my favorite garden, Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden when I spotted these two bugs. If I recall correctly I was using my trusty Nikon N70, with a cheap (I mean realy CHEAP) Vivitar 100mm Macro lens, and shooting Royal Gold print film. I think this was shot with fill flash (and not shot very well) because of the strong reflections off the bugs, but I’m not sure. I do remember the sun was low in the sky, so sunlight was strong and warm early in the morning. Then again maybe it was existing light, as I don’t see multiple hightlight/shadows…

Anways, I wonder, if two lady bugs have sex does that make them lesbians?

June is for dipping into the archives

Photograph of a frog from Bali

image

I’m not sure how I’m going to organize this, but the idea is to dedicate the month of June to culling images from the 3,695 chromes that I’ve got scanned and burned to CDs. These images are all from when I used to shoot film—Way way way back in time! Maybe I’ll add a sub-category to “Random Images” called “From the shoe box” or some such clever title. Maybe I’ll add an image each day as a “random image”, and then at the end of the month package them all up into a Gallery… Ahhhh, decisions decisions…

PHOTO NOTES:

Taken on the Island of Bali in Indonesia. This image was shot on Kodak E200 slide film and scanned using a Nikon Coolscan film scanner. The interesting thing to note is that this image was taken with existing light using a Nikon F100, and a 105 mm Micro Nikkor, in a dimly lit room in a reptile preserve. Tripods were not allowed, and there were reflections on the glass, so I held the barrel of the lens right up against the glass of the display focused carefully, and squeezed off two shots before the attendant indicated that I shouldn’t touch the glass…

I promise to not “talk” so much on all these entries this month!
