Ah yes, my fondness for bugs. I still like shooting the little critters that I find. It’s still challenging. But now I use a D100 Digital Body, and my trusty 105mm Micro Nikkor Lens… Coupled with my SB28DX flash, it’s a potent combination for macro work in the field.
Here’s what I had to say about these images when I originally posted them:
I think shooting bugs satisfies several aspects of my personality. There is the stalking of the bugs, since none of these are refrigerated or posed.. this is hunting ‘em down and shooting ‘em variety of photgraphy; very satisfying for the primitive hunter in me.
Photography is by it’s very nature a “gadget” sorta art. Lots and lots of nifty little mechanical precision toys. Might tasty… Plus there’s the fascination with the construction of the insects. They really are amazing. Have you ever taken a close look at a dragonfly before? How’s about a Bee Hunter? You can below… Another satisfaction is the problem solving involved in negotiating the complexities of closeup work.
Probably one of the most beneficial aspects of insect photography is that it is very relaxing. It involves lots of patience waiting for an insect to do something interesting, or patient searching for the little critters. Or imagine the insanity of trying to get a midair shot of a dragonfly.... And finally like any good hobby, it costs a fortune!!

The Original “Shot in the City” collection
An assortment of digital images shot in San Francisco
Shot in the City was the first gallery posted on shooter.net. The Shot in the City theme is why I originally named the site shooter.net. Luckily that name still fits, even though not all the shots are “shot in the city”.
